Golf on Peninsula Papagayo: The Ocean Course at a Glance

There is a moment on the sixth hole where most people stop thinking about their score. The tee sits on a high plateau, the fairway falls away more than two hundred feet toward Culebra Bay, and the Pacific fills the whole horizon. The hole is called El Bajo. Golfers who have played all over the world tend to describe it the same way afterward, as one of the most beautiful holes they have stood on. It is a fair warning about the rest of the round: the golf here is very good, and the setting will keep trying to distract you from it.

The Ocean Course is the only golf on Peninsula Papagayo, and it is the reason a lot of people come. Here is what to know before you play it.

The Course

The Ocean Course is an 18-hole, par-72 Arnold Palmer Signature design that opened in 2004, routed across 125 acres of old-growth forest, rolling valleys, and sea cliffs shaped by ancient lava flows. It plays to 6,788 yards from the championship tees, though it plays shorter than that number suggests, thanks to a run of elevated tee boxes that send drives sailing.

It has earned its reputation. Golf Digest ranks it among the Top 100 Courses Outside the United States, and it holds that spot on merit, not just scenery. Palmer's design team carved wide, forgiving fairways through genuinely difficult terrain, with big greens that reward a good approach and punish a lazy one. The trouble here is rarely a bunker. It is the topography, the dog-legs, and greens whose breaks look subtle and are not.

What makes it unusual is what surrounds it. Ocean views come on fourteen holes. White-faced monkeys move through the treetops over the fairways, more than a hundred bird species share the property, and iguanas and coatis turn up mid-round often enough that regulars stop reaching for their phones. You are playing inside a living ecosystem, which is both the charm of the place and, on the wrong day, a convenient excuse.

For Every Level

This is not a course that only rewards low handicaps. Multiple tee boxes let you set the challenge where you want it, so a beginner can have a forgiving, beautiful round on the same layout that gives a scratch golfer a real test from the back tees. The fairways are wide and the elevation is generous off the tee, which flatters a lot of drives. The greens are where the round is won or lost.

PGA professionals are on hand for private lessons, clinics, and instruction, and the practice facilities match the course: a full driving range and multiple short-game areas overlooking the Nacascolo Preserve. If your group mixes serious players with people picking up a club for the second time, this course handles that better than most.

The Clubhouse

Every round begins and ends at the clubhouse, which is worth arriving early for. Perched above Culebra Bay and inspired by the shape of a conch shell, the 28,000-square-foot building was originally designed by architect Ronald Zürcher and has been reimagined under Four Seasons management. Inside are the pro shop, locker rooms, a private member lounge, and Nemare, the Latin steakhouse that has quietly become one of the best dinners on the peninsula.

That last part is a practical tip. Nemare works with a third-generation local cattle ranch and does a six-course tasting, and it sits right at the clubhouse. Booking a late-afternoon tee time and rolling straight into dinner as the light goes over the bay is one of the better evenings you can plan here.

Who Can Play

This is the detail that catches people out, so plan around it. Play on the Ocean Course is intentionally limited to protect course conditions and pace, and it is reserved for members of the Club at Peninsula Papagayo and for registered guests staying on the peninsula. That includes guests staying at The Smart Villas on the peninsula. Proof of stay is required, and it is not open to day visitors driving in from off the peninsula.

In practice this is good news if you are staying with us. It means the course sees little play and stays in excellent condition, and it means you are not competing with the general public for a tee time. It also means those tee times, particularly in the dry season, want to be arranged early rather than on the morning you decide to play.

When to Play

You can play year-round. The dry season, December through April, brings the most reliable conditions and the classic golden Guanacaste light, and it is also when the course is busiest, so book ahead. The green season delivers lush, deep-green fairways and better rates, with rain that tends to hold off until the afternoon, which makes early tee times the move.

Whichever season, play early. Mornings are cooler, the light is better, and the wildlife is more active. Guanacaste gets genuinely hot by midday, so a dawn round with a cart and plenty of water beats a noon round every time.
