Peninsula Papagayo is one of the more forgiving places in Costa Rica to time a trip. It sits in Guanacaste, on the dry northwest Pacific coast, which gets more sunshine and less rain than almost anywhere else in the country. The peninsula itself is sheltered, with calmer water and, by local accounts, less rain than the surrounding coast. There is no genuinely bad time to come. There is only the time that fits what you want from the trip.

This guide walks through the year, so you can match your visit to the weather, the crowds, the price, and the things you most want to do.

The Two Seasons, in Plain Terms

Costa Rica has two seasons, and Guanacaste feels them clearly.

The dry season runs roughly December through April. Reliable sun, little to no rain, and the golden, parched landscape the region is named for (Guanacaste's dry forest turns tawny and sheds its leaves). This is the postcard version of Costa Rica, and it is peak season for exactly that reason.

The green season runs roughly May through November. The rain here is not the all-day downpour people imagine. It typically comes as an afternoon or evening shower, often after a clear, sunny morning. In exchange, the landscape turns a deep, vivid green, the crowds thin, and the rates drop. Water stays warm year-round, around 80 to 84°F, so the ocean is never the deciding factor.

Both seasons are genuinely good. What follows is how to choose between them.

The Year, Month by Month

January. Peak dry season. Highs in the upper 80s, very little rain, reliable sun. Excellent weather, busy, and priced accordingly. Book well ahead.

February. Often the sweet spot. The lowest rainfall of the year and comfortable conditions, still firmly in high season. If you want guaranteed sun and will plan early, this is a strong month.

March. The hottest and driest month, with highs in the low 90s and almost no rain. Brilliant for beach and pool days; bring sun protection and plan active mornings.

April. Still dry and hot, with the first showers sometimes arriving late in the month. The tail of high season, and often a touch quieter than February and March once the holiday weeks pass.

May. The green season begins. Afternoon showers start, but mornings are often clear, and the landscape begins to turn. Crowds thin and value improves. A favorite shoulder month for people who want sun and space.

June. Moderate, fairly predictable afternoon storms over sunny mornings. Green, quiet, and good value, with the full run of the peninsula open and uncrowded.

July. Often brings a short dry spell known locally as the veranillo, or little summer, with sunnier stretches in the middle of the rainy season. A popular family-travel month, so a bit busier than June, but a genuinely good window.

‍August. Rain picks up again, still mostly in the afternoons. Warm water, green surroundings, and the quieter, better-value feel of the green season.

September. The wettest month, with frequent afternoon and evening storms. It is also when you will find the best deals of the year and the emptiest peninsula. For a traveler who does not mind daily rain and wants value and solitude, it is underrated.

October. Very wet, similar to September, and the quietest stretch of the year. Lush, dramatic, and cheap, best for travelers who prioritize price and quiet over guaranteed sun.

November. The turn. Rain tapers off, often clearing late in the month, and the landscape is at its greenest just before the dry season returns. One of the best value-to-weather trade-offs of the year, catching the green before the crowds.

December. The dry season returns and the sun comes back reliably. Early December is a lovely, calmer window; the holiday weeks are among the busiest and priciest of the year, so book far ahead for late December.

Choosing by What You Want to Do

Weather is only half the decision. The peninsula's activities have their own seasons, and we have covered each in depth. The short version:

Surfing. The famous breaks work year-round, but the green season (May through October) brings the biggest, most consistent south swells, while the dry season brings cleaner conditions and the offshore winds that groom Witch's Rock. More in our guide to the surf spots near Papagayo.

Sport fishing. Also year-round, with billfish (sailfish and marlin) strongest in the dry season and the green season peaking for tuna, dorado, and wahoo. More in our sport fishing guide.

Wildlife. The dry season is actually the easier time to spot animals, because the bare canopy and concentrated water sources make them visible, though the forest is lusher and greener in the wet months. More in our wildlife guide.

Golf. The Arnold Palmer Ocean Course plays year-round; the dry season brings the most reliable conditions and the busiest tee sheets. More in our golf guide.

Turtle nesting. Sea turtles nest on nearby Guanacaste beaches roughly July through December, a green-season highlight that the dry months miss.

The Honest Summary

If you want guaranteed sun and the classic dry-forest landscape, and you are willing to pay peak rates and share the peninsula, come December through April, with February and March the surest bets for weather.

If you want a greener landscape, thinner crowds, better value, and you can work around an afternoon shower, come May through November, with the shoulder months of May and November offering the best balance and September and October the lowest prices.

For most people, the shoulder months, May, June, July, and November, are the quiet sweet spot: largely sunny days, a fraction of the crowds, and noticeably better rates, with the whole peninsula open and easy.

Everything you need for a seamless stay

What makes The Smart Villas different from Airbnb or VRBO?

The Smart Villas is a curated collection of luxury villas, not a marketplace. That means no platform fees, no service charges, and no algorithm deciding what you see. Booking directly with us typically saves guests 12–15% compared to the same property listed on Airbnb or VRBO.

Every home is individually selected, and every stay is concierged by our team from arrival to departure. Guests don't deal with an app or a call center. They deal with people who know these homes personally and handle every detail — transfers, restaurant reservations, local experiences — as a baseline, not an add-on.

Is a private villa or the Four Seasons better in Papagayo?

Staying in a Smart Villa means you get the full Papagayo resort experience without being confined to one property.

‍Golf cart to the Four Seasons for dinner. Walk to the Ritz-Carlton Reserve for a spa treatment. Hit the Arnold Palmer Golf Course in the morning, come home to your private pool in the afternoon. The beach clubs, the restaurants, the activities, all of it is accessible.

You're just not paying resort prices to sleep in a hotel room when you could have an entire home. The guests who choose a villa aren't skipping the resort experience. They're adding to it.
